Legalization in Canada: What does it mean?

On October 17th, 2018 use of Cannabis will be legalized in Canada, but what does that mean?  Well the answer is slightly complicated.  When the federal government legalized cannabis earlier this year, it left the provinces in charge of how it will be sold and where consumers can smoke it. From there local governments also have their own by-laws and regulations about whether it can be sold and where it can be consumed. Local municipalities control the rules about where cannabis can be smoked, and so it will differ even within a province.

Some points are somewhat constant across the country: 
  • You can’t buy cannabis if you’re under 18 (though with the exception of Alberta most provinces state 19, much like alcohol)
  • You can grow up to four plants at your residence (note this is not approved in Manitoba and Quebec where growing is still prohibited by the provinces) 
  • You can carry up to 30 grams outside your residence. This is also the limit of how much you may purchase at one time at a retailer.
  • You can have unlimited cannabis within your residence.
The regulations on where you can buy cannabis are diverse from province to province; some allowing online sales, government retailers, and private retailers, while others only allowing one or two of the options.  Here is a run down province to province:

Manitoba: stores and online sales will be exclusively private

Alberta: private retailers, but government exclusive online sales

B.C.: Both private and government retailers, but exclusive government run online sales

Ontario: undecided, but predicatively looking like private retailers, and government exclusive online sales *Ontario has announced there will be no physical retailer locations until 2019*

New Brunswick, PEI and Quebec: retailers and online sales will be exclusively government run

Newfoundland: private retailers, but government exclusive online sales

 Nova Scotia: Online and retailers will be government run, as well cannabis will be sold at liquor stores.

Nunavut: Online sales only will be run by government.

 Northwest Territories: Online and stores will be government run, as well cannabis will be sold at liquor stores.

 Yukon: Online and retailers will be government run

Kief: What is it, why you want it, how to get it...

Kief, keef or keif is formed from dried resin producing glands (called trichomes) on the leaves of cannabis plants. It looks like a fine brown powder when collected. Kief is also called crystal or pollen at times because of its appearance.
