The Pros and Cons of Silicone
Glass is without a doubt
the best material to smoke from. However, glass can
break and no matter how expensive or thick a piece is... there
is always a chance of it breaking. All smokers know the agonizing heartbreak of
watching your beloved bong fall and shatter. Silicon in recent years has been
hitting the market to try and combat the broken glass problem. For a
lot of people silicone pipes or pieces have become a lifesaver, and for some, not worth it and dedicated solely to glass. Silicone definitely has its pros and
cons. Here we lay out the pluses and minuses or silicone.
The biggest pro: Silicone pieces are unbreakable and therefore great for smoking on the go or traveling because they can be folded and stored away without risk of breaking! They are also dishwasher safe and can be very easy to clean. Some designs are very cute and not possible in glass. The price point is generally lower than glass as well, a key pro to silicone.
The cons: Silicone is not beautiful or as stunning as glassware. Pieces can get stinky if you do not drain and dry them... stale water clings to silicone. Smokers also complain that the silicone has a taste to it that glass does not. Furthermore NO PERCs... no peculators is a deal breaker for a lot of smokers. Silicone can only withstand a heat of about 200 degrees Celsius, so they must have glass parts if being used for a rig or with a torch.
So is silicone worth a try? Definitely for a small portable piece, especially if you have a gift for breaking things... but will it replace glassware? Never.
