Weed Grinders: Why you need one

What is a weed grinder? As the name might indicate, its small device that shreds or chops up cannabis efficiently into consistent smooth pieces. There are 2 main types of grinders that perform the same task: manual and electric. Whether hand or motor powered, weed grinders make life easier for the user. Weed grinders save sweaty, clumsy and fumbling hands from the smell of flower, and do a far better and faster job than anyone could without one.

Weed grinders will, also, make your tokes more potent and taste better. The fine consistency a good grinder produces increases overall surface area of the weed that is in contact on ignition producing more flavor and potency. By producing more potent hits and by preventing lost flower and holding the grounds, a great grinder should also save money in the long run. 

Beyond all these benefits, one more exists that is by far the most coveted of all cannabis lovers: kief. The best grinders will shred cannabis into a fine consistency, with the extra added enormous benefit of capturing treasured kief crystals in a specialized compartment, called a kief catcher. A kief catcher refers to the bottom chamber located below a screen that gathers all the potent crystal that falls off the buds in the grinding process. Users can scoop the kief out and add it to the top of your bowl for an extra punch or use it to make edibles.

There are several factors to consider to when selecting a grinder, the first of which is the material it is made of.  The cheapest grinders are made of acrylic, however these are less durable and less consistent in their duty of shredding.  Acrylic grinders typically do not do a great job nor do they last long.  Most grinders are made of metal.  If selecting an aluminum grinder ensure its high grade or anodized to prevent small shavings of aluminum from entering the grounds which can be toxic. Other options such as titanium or stainless steel can be more expensive but are highly durable and will produce metal shavings. The lid of a weed grinder should be tight, and have a soft plastic seal or magnetic lid to prevent spills and limit the scent. When it comes to teeth the general rule is: the more the merrier.  But look at the spacing of the teeth and how sharp they are. Diamond shaped teeth have tested as the most effective at shredding, and are the most desirable.  Aside from the diamond shape of the teeth and the number of teeth your grinder has, the placement of the teeth is also crucial. Teeth should allow enough space so not trap pieces of flower but close enough to effectively grind.  For consistent grounds, a grinder should have a consistent or equal distribution of teeth around the grinding chamber. Finally, and most importantly for many, ensure there is a kief catcher if so desired.  The screen over the kief catcher must have appropriately sized holes, large enough to let kief through but small enough to block ground cannabis.
