Quality Glass: What to look for
There are 2
things to take note of when selecting a glass piece based on
durability and quality: the type of glass and its thickness. Of
the two quality of glass is paramount over thickness; however, both play integral roles
in determining the durability and life span of your piece. Other factors such
as the skill of the blower is brand dependent, and harder to research as it
involves joint welds and inspection. Nevertheless, glass quality and thickness are the best indicators
of the overall strength and construction of the piece.
The type of
glass the piece is constructed with is usually contingent on the location of
its construction. Glass made in the United States or Europe is generally the
same glass as used in lab equipment called borosilicate glass, “German schott”
or “Schott duran”. This is the highest quality material to make glass out of
and is higher quality material than that found in glass made in China.
Most name brands will have their glass made in Europe or the United States and
be made of this top quality borosilicate glass.
Glass
thickness has an imperative role in durability, weight and strength of the
glass. Glass thickness is measured in millimeters, and generally ranges from 3mm
to 9mm. The thicker the glass, the heavier and more durable it will be.
Heaviness of the piece is a personal preference however weight does mean a
piece is harder to carry and maneuver, but it also means the improved ability
to withstand, wear, pressure and damage.
The quality
of the material used to make the glass is of higher importance and priority
than thickness. A glass piece made with
high quality borosilicate material with a thickness of 3mm will be stronger
than one of weak and poor material with a thickness of 9mm.
